relocation to our beautiful Hudson Valley, located 75 miles north of
New York City and 60 miles south of the state capital (Albany).
According to the most recent census data, Ulster County is home to
177,749 residents, occupying 20 towns, three villages, and one city
spread across 1,127 square miles of the Hudson Valley.

Transportation |
|
Ulster County is the only county in New York State that offers three
direct links to the New York State Thruway at Saugerties (exit 20),
Kingston (Exit 19), and New Paltz (Exit 18). Travel by car to New
York City is approximately 90 minutes, and north to the Capital
Region is less than one hour.
Ulster County also offers quick and easy access to two major airline
terminals: Stewart
International in Newburgh is approximately 30 minutes south of
Kingston which features low rate carriers.
Public transportation is provided by Ulster County Area
Transportation (UCAT at 845-340-3333) and Kingston Citi-Buses (845-331-0682).
Adirondack Trailways
and Arrow Bus
lines provide service throughout Ulster County and to other
communities. Taxicabs and rental cars are also available. Passenger
rail service via Amtrak is available within minutes of Kingston, by
crossing the George Clinton Rhinecliff Bridge in Rhinecliff. Metro
North service is available in nearby Poughkeepsie, approximately 15
minutes from the New Paltz area.

Taxes |

The New York State individual income tax rates range from 4% to 6.85%
of taxable income. For more information, you may call the new York
State IncomeTax Office toll free at 1-800-255-5829 (in NYS) or
518-438-8581 (outside NYS). There is no personal property tax. Real
property tax rates are set locally and vary accordingly. The current
property tax rates can be obtained by calling the Ulster County Real
Property Tax Office at (845) 340-3490. For school tax information,
contact the local school district office.
The State of New York levies a 4% sales tax. Localities may impose an
additional sales tax up to 4%. The combined state and county sales
tax is 8%

Licenses & Registration Motor Vehicles
Vehicles must be registered within 30 days of residency in the state;
a drivers license must be obtained within 60 days. Written,

Voter Registration
Residents must be 18 years of age and be registered at their local
address at least 25 days prior to a primary or general election.

Emergency Services
Most communities have a full-time police force. The county
Sheriffs Department maintains jail facilities, patrol services
and a detective unit. The county is also served by the New York State
Police and enhanced 911 emergency service is provided. The City of
Kingston maintains a paid fire-fighting force, supplemented by
volunteer fire companies throughout the county. A full-time Hazardous
Materials office is staffed by Ulster County.
